I’m rooting for Mayor Gray. I truly believe he is sincere in his desire to improve the lives of residents of DC. He admits to many missteps and I’m looking forward to the next three years of his administration.

On December 19th, I partnered with Louis’ Restaurant & Carryout in Ivy City to provide a meal and toiletries to the residents of the homeless shelter on the New York Ave. Kudos to Louis and the DCPS bus drivers for their monthly outreach. I’m looking forward to partnering with them going forward.

A very nice OpEd by my good friend and fellow hornet, Darius J. Brown. Like DC and everywhere else, Wilmington, DE faces high unemployment and struggles to put residents back to work. Darius has a solid plan to combat this challenge. I admire his tenacity to bring about change in “Dub City.”

I’m always interested in unique perspectives and this certainly qualifies as one. While I don’t agree, I respect his opinion and even his right to freedom of speech. What’s your take?

What a great story!
Marion Barry Discusses DC Council Reelection Bid With FOX 5 News
I respect Barry a great deal. He was elected and had the skill set to lead in an era when DC and the country was much different. My parents, who were raised in this city in the 40’s and 50’s, knew a completely different DC. When Barry came along in the 60’s and 70’s, he was exactly what was needed. His leadership set a foundation for the DC we have today.
Barry hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the fact there there are so few elected positions in DC. This stifles civic ambition. It discourages new blood and fresh ideas from holding responsible positions in the city. I will state that the position of Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners is a good position, when properly utilized. I believe this position could be further consolidated, revamped, and given more responsibility.

I’m praying for this brother to succeed. Murder is the most egregious crime one can commit. On the surface, it would be easy to condemn him as a callous monster. If you look beneath the surface, you get a glimpse of how a person is a product of their upbringing and environment. It’s sad that two lives were lost (his and the victims). This brother now has an opportunity to resurrect one of them.

Heavy D will be missed! He leaves behind such a rich legacy of music, film, and creative works. Most of all, he touched many lives with his personality and character. Of course I didn’t know him personally. However, he had an authentically warm spirit that radiated from his work. May he rest in peace.

Justice Clarence Thomas once told Reggie Black and I that perseverance is a combination of patience and persistence. I heard him then, I understand him now.
If you are fortunate to have a dream and the courage to chase it, there will be moments of self doubt, discouragement, and down right fatigue. You’ll question the merits of your dream and if it is all worth it. At times, the sacrifice will seem like it is too much.
That’s the time when you must persevere.
That’s the time to redouble your efforts.
By all accounts, most would consider me a confident guy. I am. However, like many, I struggle with insecurities and discouragement. It is a daily battle! The should’ve, would’ve, could’ves vs. The I can, I will and I musts.
Below are just a few things I do to encourage myself in no particular order.
1) Dwell on God’s grace and mercy. If He never does another thing for me, He has done more than I deserve.
2) Find a word to inspire me. Sometimes it is in the Bible, other times it is in a magazine or book.
3) Listen to a positive tune. Music is powerful. It carries spirits or vibes (whatever you want to call
it). The right song can change my entire mood or disposition. Donald Lawrence’s music always inspires me.
4) Focus on the purpose of my passion. It motivates me to think of what God has in store for me and the change I can bring about. I think about all of the people that are depending on my positive contribution. I think about my family (current and future) that are depending on me.
5) Pray and meditate. It works!
These are just a few. If I follow all five, I’m usually in a much better state of mind afterwards. Please share your techniques.
